Yakima Valley Museum

The Yakima Valley Museum is proud to partner with KCTS 9 to bring you a special sneak preview of this new 10-part documentary by filmmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick.  The film series will be nationally broadcast on PBS stations beginning on September 17.

Ken Burns is one of the most acclaimed documentary filmmakers of the past 40 years, bursting onto the scene in 1981 with The Brooklyn Bridge.  He became a PBS fixture in 1990 with his seminal 9-part epic The Civil War, which changed the way documentary films are made and proved the medium could engage a broad public.  Burns has directed, produced, and/or executive produced 28 films, exploring American history, values, and identity in such masterworks as Baseball (1994), Lewis and Clark: the Journey of the Corp of Discovery (1997), Jazz (2001), The National Parks: America's Best Idea (2009), The Dust Bowl (2012), The Roosevelts: An Intimate History (2014), and Jackie Robinson(2016).  Now, along with producing and directing partner Lynn Novick, Burns tackles the turbulent years of the Vietnam War, not only from how America experienced it, but also from the perspective of the Vietnamese.

Our program on September 14 begins with a 50-minute video overview of the documentary series, featuring scenes and highlights from the film’s full 18 hours.  The screening will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Enrique Cerna, KCTS 9 senior correspondent.  Panelists will include Vietnam veterans Michael Hackett and Yakima native Vincent Visaya; Dr. Marilyn Levine, a professor of Asian history at Central Washington University; and Vietnam-born Son Michael Pham, whose family became refugees following the fall of Saigon before finding a new home in the United States.

Doors open at 6:00 PM, the screening begins at 6:30.
This program is FREE, but reservations are highly recommended.  Reserve your seats by clicking on the following KCTS link or by calling the museum at (509) 248-0747.  Reservations will be guaranteed until 6:20 the night of the event.
